Black History Month: Rocky Dawuni

February 8, 2011 § 1 Comment

In honor of Black history Month
I wanted to share with you one of my favorite reggae artists out there right now. Rocky Dawuni is an international star from Ghana but might be known by most of the younger generation by his songs being featured in EA Sports FIFA Soccer 2010 & FIFA World Cup 2010. Rocky’s latest album “Hymns For The Rebel Soul” was inspired and written over the course of his travels around the world, trying to reflect on the common feelings of ordinary folks. A true reggae artist who deserves much more recognition than he already gets.

I wish I could share the whole album, but 3 tracks should give you the idea this guy rules.

Chopteeth Afrobeat Out Today

Yes most of these guys are white…
But I plan to focus a lot on African music this month and Chopteeth has honed their skills in African rock and funk. Plus…their new live album is out today and nothing beats some good ole fashioned live Afrobeat. Unlike most American Afrobeat groups, Chopteeth doesn’t just focus on Fela Kuti and all that jazz, they actually tracked down some old forgotten Afrobeat heroes to play their songs live. These guys are legit, check out their take on Fela’s “J.J.D.” below, courtesy of the Afrobeat Blog .

P.S. Expect some actual black musicians in honor of Black History Month in the coming weeks, this is just getting the ball rolling
