Monday Warming: Taj Weekes “Just a Dream”

April 18, 2011 § Leave a comment

Had a chance to meet this very lovable guy at SXSW this year and it’s good to see him picking up some steam. With last weekend’s headline at the Austin Reggae Festival and some upcoming stints on the West coast, Taj is sure to start making some headlines. He hails from St. Lucia and on his latest album ‘A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen’ he sings on topical subjects such as “Janjaweed” about the armed gunmen in Darfur, “Rain Rain” about New Orleans, and the below track “Just a Dream” which is just a feel good song, telling us “tear fear go away, you will come another day, just deep inside, let’s see life’s sunny side”

Black History Month: Rocky Dawuni

February 8, 2011 § 1 Comment

In honor of Black history Month
I wanted to share with you one of my favorite reggae artists out there right now. Rocky Dawuni is an international star from Ghana but might be known by most of the younger generation by his songs being featured in EA Sports FIFA Soccer 2010 & FIFA World Cup 2010. Rocky’s latest album “Hymns For The Rebel Soul” was inspired and written over the course of his travels around the world, trying to reflect on the common feelings of ordinary folks. A true reggae artist who deserves much more recognition than he already gets.

I wish I could share the whole album, but 3 tracks should give you the idea this guy rules.

Chiptune Reggae Label

Remember the original NES?  Ah those were the days.  Jamming that Mega Man IV cartridge into the machine and then sticking a something in there with it to keep it pressed down.  Yup, life was never better until there was a resurgence of the NES system.  They definitely have that retro appeal that’s bringing them back into style, and not just the machine’s coming back, but those lovely 8-bit jams as well.  8-bit music (or chiptune) has become pretty popular among DJs and indie musicians everywhere and there is an online label dedicated to signing artists who solely make reggae and dub style chiptune music. They’re called Jahtari, it’s great!
