How fitting is it that our Remix Wednesday features the same artist as this week’s Monday Warming? Adventure Club is a newly formed (early 2011) dubstep duo from Montréal with plans to release a new EP soon. I never thought James V. McMorrow’s dreamy voice could fit into a dubstep remix so well.
Check out their soundcloud here.

On March 3, The Chicago Reader had a story called “SoundCloud Raining on its Own Parade” which analyzed the extreme growth in popularity of SoundCloud (over 2 million users today) and the rights of copyright owners of the songs that it allows to be posted on its site.
According to the article, SoundCloud has pretty much kept a “hands-off” stance as far as the material on its site goes except for their implementation of Audible Magic last November, a software that crawls through material and analyzes the source of the rights and ownership of each song uploaded. This would explain the huge flux in SoundCloud tracks being deleted from accounts and blogs across the internet.
What I got from the article is basically SoundCloud is now teetering on a fine line between copyright infringement and a “fair use” approach to the material that is being uploaded to its site. They have decided to leave the copyright enforcement up to record labels and copyright owners, but it seems like it’s just a matter of time before an artist or corporate label gets too pissed off to let any of this slide any longer.
Apparently the site’s initial purpose was to give DJs and remixers a place to upload their mixes as well as find samples and tracks to use in their music. Sampling, of course, has always been a hot topic in the debate over “fair use” and copyright infringement. SoundCloud seems to have just given it a violent push into even more controversy. Maybe this will result in the idea of sampling actually being taken to court which could either end up with further rights to DJs or less rights to music than we’ve ever imagined.
GypsySphere completely supports SoundCloud and the push towards a Creative Commons policy in the U.S.

I don’t know what it is, but this track got my attention
This track comes from a student DJ at Santa Cruz University named Minnesota. He says “I try to focus more on the melodic side of dubstep” which is apparent on this track. I’m not sure what I enjoy about this, but obviously others like it as well, ‘Sunburst’ has quickly acquired 300+ likes on Soundcloud…in a day.
See what you think for yourself, curious to hear some comments on this one.
